About Me

The more I learned about your website, the more I feel like I am being less than honest about  my reason for contacting you.  However if you feel that is the case after learning my motive I will withdraw my name..     I stopped by Mann supply a while back to try to see if I could find a woodworker who would be willing to build my wife some simple furniture (blanket chest for instance)  out of some very old longleaf  heart pine.  I only have 1"x8" x30 ft long planks, plus some 8' or 10" square hewn beams( only about 8' long each).  The rep. at Mann told me to go to their website and click on your link for the most likely source of woodworkers who took pride in their work.  I am not looking for a cheap price; just a skilled individual who would be interested in some small projects.   I live in West Columbia and the lumber is stored near Winnsboro, if that matters.  If you do not think my needs are a good fit for any of your members, I understand and apologize for any inconvienence.    Thanks; David Jeffcoat

About Me

I'm an amateur but earnest woodworker learning new skills as I go. I built a wine cellar - storage room and it came out well.  I'm interested in expanding my skills and learning about box and furniture making next.

About Me

I am orginally from Winfield, IL although my wife and I moved to Cayce this summer from Columbia, MO. We also lived in St. Petersburg, FL for seven years where I taught high school English. I am a stay-at-home dad to my two sons, Marshall (born 2/20/10) and Eero (born 10/12/11).

I spent the first part of my creative life playing jazz, classical, and rock guitar and singing in bands. Several years ago I took some woodworking classes in Columbia, MO and really enjoyed them. I love the fact that with wood, as opposed to music, I can create tangible objects that add value to people's lives. Instead of my work disappearing into the ether as a song's performance does, the objects I make stick around now. Their success or failure is permanently on display which is exiting, a different kind of challenge. While a musician can slide past a group of missed notes or look forward to his audience forgetting a flub, the woodworker doesn't have that luxury. The wood object demands perfection. Fortunately, the woodworker can use whatever time she or he has to arrive at it.

I am almost exclusively concerned with the ideas of modern design and their execution. I enjoy simple, honest shapes in wood and emphasizing the idea of subtraction while creating instead of addition. For me, form follows function. Any design ideas or woodcraft endemic to pre-Arts and Crafts movement are basically lost on me (excluding earlier Japanese traditions). I just can't bring myself to get exited about a Windsor chair, Federal style furniture, or Victorian mouldings. Instead, for me its Gerrit Reitveld's Red and Blue Chair, Brutalist furniture, and planes that meet without mouldings of any kind. I should say that I wished I liked older styles more as I recognize a tremendous amount of skill and knowledge in those objects, skill and knowledge that could be incorporated into modern designs. In any event, I only have the time now to make the kind of objects I love the most. My practice sessions at the turning wheel on a William and Mary style table leg will have to wait (or never come at all)!

I look forward to getting to know everyone better. Please don't hesitate to send me a message.

About Me
I've been wood working for around 2 years. I enjoy using both hand tools and power tools while building projects. I'm a fan of shaker, green and green, arts and crafts as well as victorian furniture. I try and learn something new about the craft every day.
